Rag Flags
I had seen some variations of this craft and knew I wanted to try it. Vintage fabric is something I love to use, so I headed to some estate sales and a local antique fair to search for the perfect fabric (I know, twist my arm!). After hunting and searching through so much vintage fabric, I came across this hanky. I about died when I found it; it was absolutely perfect for the stars portion of my flag. I kept hunting until I came across this darling vintage Christmas apron and knew I had found what I was after. Time to take my treasures home and start crafting...
Tools:
2 types of fabric. It does not need to be vintage.
Small dowels 1/4 in.
Small wooden beads or cone to top the dowel
White or cream spray paint (depending on the colors in your fabric)
Drop cloth
Gold paint
Paintbrush
Hot glue
Rotary fabric cutter or scissors.
Iron & ironing board
Double-sided Heat N Bond interfacing
To start, hot glue the wooden bead to the top of the dowel to create a decorative top for the flag pole.
Next, use gold acrylic paint and paint the deceptive top gold.
Once dry, use painter's tape to tape off the decorative top.
Spraypaint the remaining pole/dowel white.
Lay the flag pole on the drop cloth and paint them with white spray paint.
Once dry, remove the blue tape.
Lay out the fabric for the base of the flag ( the stripes part)
Cut into four 9x6 rectangles and set aside.
Lay out the fabric for the stars portion of the flag and cut it into 3x2 portions.
Cut the interfacing into 3x2 pieces.
Using the iron, iron the interfacing onto one side of the stars fabric.
Remove the paper overlay from the interfacing and place on the top left corner of the flag. Leaving 3/8 of an inch to wrap the flag around the dowel.
Using the iron, attach the two pieces of fabric together.
Run a bead of hot glue down the flag pole from right under the wooden bead down five inches.
Quickly wrap your flag around the pole (securing with a little more glue as needed).
Now your cute little flags are ready to be added to a vase or a floral arrangement. This is such a fun way to add a few cute 4th of July touches around your home.
Happy 4th Babes
